BACKGROUND: Obesity is accompanied by dysregulated inflammation, which can contribute to vasculometabolic complications including metabolic syndrome and atherosclerosis. Recently, clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP) has emerged as a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. We aimed to determine how CHIP is related to immune cell function, systemic inflammation, and vasculometabolic complications in obese individuals. METHODS AND RESULTS: Two hundred ninety-seven individuals with overweight and obesity, between the ages of 54 and 81 years, were recruited in a cross-sectional study. Clonal hematopoiesis driver mutations (CHDMs) were identified with an ultrasensitive targeted assay. Assessment of carotid artery atherosclerosis was performed with ultrasound. Detailed immunological parameters, including cytokine production capacity of peripheral blood mononuclear cells, and targeted plasma proteomics analysis, were studied. Adipose tissue inflammation was determined in subcutaneous fat biopsies. Individuals with CHIP had higher concentrations of circulating IL (interleukin)-6. Total number of leukocytes and neutrophils were higher in individuals with CHIP. In contrast, ex vivo cytokine production capacity of peripheral blood mononuclear cells was significantly lower in individuals with CHIP. Sex-stratified analysis showed that men with CHDMs had significantly higher leukocyte and neutrophil counts, and ex vivo cytokine production capacity was lower in women with CHDMs. Surprisingly, the presence of atherosclerotic plaques was significantly lower in individuals with CHDMs. There was no relation between CHIP and metabolic syndrome. CONCLUSIONS: In individuals with overweight or obesity, CHDMs are not associated with vasculometabolic complications, but rather with a lower presence of carotid plaques. CHDMs associate with increased circulating inflammatory markers and leukocyte numbers, but a lower peripheral blood mononuclear cell cytokine production capacity.

Metal pollution is a major environmental concern worldwide, especially in Egypt. The aquaculture industry uses widespread artificial feeds to stimulate fish production, leading to metal accumulation in the aquatic environment. Heavy metal concentrations (HMCs) in sediments, water, and tissues were studied to study the effect of pollution levels on heamatological, and biochemical, immunological aspects of farmed fish as well as on human health. Results declared that the HMC levels in the water and sediment were significantly different between El-Sharkia and Kafr El-Sheikh fishponds (T-test, p < 0.05). This was supported by the metal pollution index in the water and sediment, indicating that El-Sharkia fishponds (ES fishponds) were more contaminated than Kafr El-Sheikh fishponds (KES fishponds). Also, HMCs in fish tissues were significantly increased in fish cultivated in ES fishponds than in KES fishponds. Haematological, immunological, and biochemical alterations of Bolti (Oreochromis niloticus) and Topara (Chelon ramada) fish were significantly different within the different fish species as well as the different fishponds. From the human health perspective, the THQ-HMC and HI-HMC associated with the consumption of muscle suggest a safe non-carcinogenic risk to human health. In contrast, cadmium poses a cancer risk to children who consume the muscular tissue of Bolti fish from ES fishponds, which should be regarded as a warning sign based on data indices and a human health perspective. In order to minimise HMC pollution in the aquaculture sector, it is advisable to take possible assessments and carry out continuous monitoring considering international WHO/FAO assessments.

The bacterial fish pathogen Edwardsiella tarda causes heavy stock mortality, severely hampering fish production, resulting in great economic loss to the farming industry. The first biological barriers that confer immune protection against pathogen entry are the fish mucosal surfaces. The present study was undertaken to investigate the influence of E. tarda on certain enzymatic and non-enzymatic parameters in the skin mucous secretions of the fish Cirrhinus mrigala using spectrophotometry and zymography. Fish were randomly divided into three groups: control, vehicle control, and infected. A sublethal dose of E. tarda (2.2 × 106 CFU/fish) suspended in 50 µL of PBS was injected intra-peritoneally at 0 day (d). Subsequently, mucus samples were collected at 2 d, 4 d, 6 d and 8 d post-infection. The activities of lysozyme (LYZ), protease (PROT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), acid phosphatase (ACP), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (PER), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione S-transferase (GST) decreased significantly in the skin mucus of the challenged fish, indicating the suppressed immune system and decreased antioxidant capacity of C. mrigala to E. tarda infection. Lipid peroxidation (LPO) and total nitrate-nitrite were significantly higher at several time points post-infection, suggesting that physiological functions have been impaired following pathogen challenge. The present findings could be relevant for fish aquaculture and underline the importance of skin mucus not only for assessing fish immune status but also for identifying early warning signals of disease caused by pathogens.

OBJECTIVE: The aim: To establish the clinical and immunological features of the course of caries in young people who have suffered from the coronavirus disease. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Materials and methods: The main group consisted of 30 people aged 20,6±2,4 years who suffered from the Covid19 coronavirus infection 6,1±1,2 months ago. All patients underwent a dental and immunological examination. RESULTS: Results: The analysis of the indicators of the dental status revealed the possibility of the existence of a relationship between the signs of the transferred acute viral infection SARS-Cov2 and the development of dental caries, first, under the condition of reduced caries resistance. In the immune system of the examined patients were found significant changes, which definitely played a pathogenetic role in the development and progression of the carious process. They were manifested by changes of varying degrees of severity, which were both unidirectional and opposite in nature: T-lymphocyte deficiency, in particular, mainly due to T-cytotoxic lymphocytes/suppressors, an increased level of B-lymphocytes and an increased level of activated CD54+ cells of T-lymphocytes. CONCLUSION: Conclusions: In young people with dental caries who have suffered a coronavirus infection during the last 6 months, the prevalence of caries and its intensity are significantly higher than in the comparison group. Violations in the cellular and humoral links of the immune system, which combined with the pro-in¬flammatory profile of the blood serum, the phenomenon of immunotoxicosis, contributed to the further progression of the carious process in the oral cavity.

OBJECTIVE: The aim: This study aims to investigate some of the immunological parameters related to Helicobacter pylori patients, including: interleukin (IL-17), cluster of differentiation 4 (CD4), macrophage inhibitory migration factor (MIF), nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kB). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Materials and methods: The immunological parameters were investigated by using ELISA technology, and compared with the healthy individuals (control). RESULTS: Results: The level of IL-17A in the serum showed a significant increase (p < 0.05) in the HPP group compared to the control group. The CD4 serum concentration in infected with H. pylori patients was high level (4.23 ± 0.41 ng/ml) with significant increase (p < 0.05) than to healthy individuals (control) (1.93 ± 0.22 ng/ml). Also, there was significant elevation (p < 0.05) in in the level of serum MIF levels in H. pylori patients (75.23 ± 1.88 ng/ml) as compared to the control (65.11 ± 2.25 ng/ml). Serum NF-kB concentration in patients infected with H. pylori was at a high level (8.15 ± 0.58 ng/ml) with a significant elevated (p < 0.05) as compared to control (3.91 ± 0.47 ng/ml). On the other hand, the results proved that there is significant elevation (p < 0.05) in blood NF-kB level in smokers infected with H. pylori (9.43 ± 0.95ng/ml), compared with non-smokers infected with Helicobacter pylori (4.96 ± 1.46 ng/ml). CONCLUSION: Conclusions: Both humoral and cellular immune response plays an important role in patients with Helicobacter pylori. The nuclear factor kappa B is considered a risk factor in smoking patients, infected with Helicobacter Pylori can be considered as an early diagnosis of stomach cancer.

This study was proposed to highlight the impact of dietary Spirulina platensis (SP) supplementation in alleviating the deterioration effect of Escherichia coli (EC) on the growth performance, redox biomarkers, immune reaction, and hindgut microbial counts and acidosis in broiler chickens. Four hundred Cobb500, one-day-old, broiler chickens were deposited in battery cages (10 chicks per cage). The chicks were distributed into totally randomized 2 × 2 factorial treatments (10 replicate cages per treatment) from the day 22 to the day 42 of age. Birds of two of the groups were fed on a basal diet without SP supplementation (-SP groups), while birds of the other two groups were fed on a basal diet supplemented with 10 g/kg SP (+SP groups). At day 36th of age, birds in one of the -SP and +SP groups were challenged by an intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection with 107 CFU/bird EC (O157:H7 strain) in 0.5 mL sterilized saline (+EC groups), whereas the other non-challenged groups were i.p. injected with 0.5 mL saline only (-EC groups). The current study results indicated that the boilers challenged with EC had a significant (p < 0.05) lower performance, poor antioxidant activity, immunosuppression, and higher numbers of pathogenic bacteria in the intestine when compared with the non-challenged birds. Dietary SP inclusion enhanced (p < 0.05) broiler growth, antioxidant activity, immune response, and intestinal beneficial bacteria and acidosis. Moreover, SP alleviated the reduction in all these parameters after exposure to EC infection. Therefore, diets containing 10 g/kg SP could be used as a promising approach to maximize broilers' production and support their health, particularly when challenged with EC infection.

Heavy metal accumulation changes the immune system and leads to oxidative damage in aquatic animals. The present study evaluated the correlation between heavy metal accumulation, with immunological and oxidative stress parameters, in various species in the aquatic environment of Western Iran. Fresh samples included fish (trout and carp) and shrimp obtained from Sanandaj aquaculture. After blood sampling and serum isolation for immunological study, meat sections of these animals were used to measure heavy metal concentrations to determine the oxidative stress and immunological parameters. The highest concentrations of Pb (0.82 ± 0.10), As (0.53 ± 0.18), Hg (0.47 ± 0.08), and Zn (28.77 ± 1.88) (µg/g) were found in trout, while the lowest accumulation of heavy metals except for Cd (0.24 ± 0.11) and Se (1.57 ± 0.42) (µg/g) were observed in shrimp. The antioxidant enzymes glutathione peroxidase (GPx) (1.89 ± 0.13) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) (1.96 ± 0.62) U/mg showed the highest concentrations in shrimp and lowest in the trout. Significant negative correlations were found between these enzymes with As and Pb in trout and carp. A significant positive correlation was determined between Se and Zn with GPx and a negative correlation with malondialdehyde (MDA) in shrimp. Immunological biomarkers indicated the concentrations of IL-6, TNF-α, and IFN-Ƴ were higher in fish than in shrimp, and the lowest IgM level was obtained in Shrimp. Increased Pb and Cd showed a significant relationship with increased IL-6 and TNF-α in trout compared to shrimp and carp. An increase in As and Se concentration beyound maximum permissible limits (MPL) were recorded in fish and shrimp, while a Zn level less than MPL was recorded. The target hazard quotients (THQ) and target cancer risk (TR) values of non-essential heavy metals were obtained under acceptable ranges. We suggest reducing the As and Pb content under aquaculture farms and increase in the amount of Zn through diets to keep healthy immunological and physiological conditions for aquatic species in the west of Iran.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The long-term effect of regular plateletpheresis on donors has not been characterized. Hence, we planned to study the long-term alterations in hematological, biochemical, and immunological parameters in regular repeat platelet apheresis donors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-three healthy voluntary regular repeat apheresis donors presenting for platelet donation, fulfilling the requisite donor selection criteria, underwent sequential analysis of the hematological, biochemical, and immunological parameters over 1 year. RESULTS: A total of 33 regular repeat donors were enrolled in the study; out of these, 22 could be followed up to 3 months, 12 up to 6 months, and 10 donors up to 12 months for their hematological, biochemical, and immunological parameters. Overall, there was no significant change in hematological profile except a rise in platelet count at 3 months (P = 0.023) with no significant difference at 6 and 12 months from the baseline. In addition, serum thrombopoietin levels at 3 months (P = 0.010) and serum erythropoietin at 6 months (P = 0.01) were significantly higher than baseline. Mean platelet volume was significantly higher from baseline at 12 months (P = 0.00). Serum protein, lymphocyte subpopulation, and serum ferritin did not show any significant change from baseline over 12 months of follow-up. However, there was a significant decline (P = 0.00) in serum calcium and an increase in serum magnesium from baseline (P = 0.03) at 12 months. INTERPRETATIONS AND CONCLUSIONS: To conclude, apheresis platelet donation is a safe procedure. However, a complete hematological, biochemical, immunological profile and bone marrow density at regular intervals (3-6 months) are recommended to ensure the safety of regular repeat plateletpheresis donors.

This study aimed to examine the effects of two high-intensity interval training programs (HIIT) on maximal aerobic velocity (MAV), hematological variations and muscle damage markers in young healthy adults. Twenty-nine male physical education students, aged 20.3 ± 3.3 years, volunteered to participate in this study, and were randomly assigned to a control group (CG, n = 9) or two intervention groups (group 1 or 2). Intervention group 1 (n = 10) exercised at 100% of their MAV (EG100) while group 2 (n = 10) exercised at 110% MAV (EG110). Before and after the eight week training program, blood samples were drawn at rest, before, and after an intermittent exercise. Aspartate aminotransferase (ASAT), alanine aminotransferase (ALAT), C reactive protein (CRP), creatine kinase (CK) concentrations and hematological parameters (white blood cells [WBC], monocytes [MO], lymphocytes [LY], neutrophil [NE]) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were measured. Post-hoc tests showed that MAV was significantly higher in EG110 compared to EG100 after HIIT (p < 0.01, ηp2 = 0.05), whilst ALAT, ASAT, and CPR were significantly lower (p < 0.01; 0.02 < ηp2 < 0.11) in EG110 compared to EG100. Moreover, post-hoc tests indicated that LY decreased significantly (p < 0.001, ηp2 = 0.21) only for EG110. Furthermore, there were significant positive correlations for both EG100 and EG110 between MAV and ALAT (r = 0.66, p = 0.044 and r = 0.64, p = 0.041 respectively), CK (r = 0.67, p = 0.031 and r = 0.86, p = 0.030, respectively), LDH (r = 0.74, p = 0.014, and r = 0.071, p = 0.021, respectively). In addition, there was a significant positive correlation for both, EG100 and EG110 between MAV and LY (r = 0.79, p < 0.01; r = 0.72, p < 0.05, respectively). Concerning the relationship between MAV and NE, there was a significant positive correlation (r = 0.66; p < 0.05) only for EG110. Findings from this study revealed that HIIT at 110% MAV was more efficient to improve MAV and reduce muscle damage. In addition, we observed significant associations between performance improvements (MAV) and markers of muscle damage.

The present study aimed to evaluate the protective effect of protexin supplementation against chlorpyrifos-induced oxidative stress and immunotoxicity in Cyprinus carpio. After 21 days, the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and glutathione reductase (GR), and total antioxidant levels significantly decreased in hepatocytes of fish exposed to chlorpyrifos, while malondialdehyde (MDA) increased. Treatment with protexin was able to reverse the decrease in SOD and GR and significantly reduce MDA levels. Exposure to chlorpyrifos also induced alterations in blood biochemical parameters and caused immunosuppression. Dietary protexin return some parameters (aspartate aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, and γ-glutamyltransferase activities, and glucose, cholesterol, total protein, creatinine, and complement C4 levels) to values similar to those of the control group. Based on the results, it can be concluded that protexin exerted protective effects against chlorpyrifos exposure in C. carpio reducing oxidative damage, and ameriorating blood biochemical alterations and the immunosuppression.

The gut microbiota is implicated in diverse interactions affecting human health. The present study reports a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study conducted by administering a new synbiotic formulation composed of two Lactobacillus strains (L. plantarum and L. acidophilus) and one Bifidobacterium strain (B. animalis subsp. lactis) and two types of fructans (fructo-oligosaccharides with a degree of polymerization of 3-5 and inulin-type fructans with 10 DP). The effects of this synbiotic were evaluated on healthy subjects for 28 days and the maintenance of its efficacy was evaluated at the end of a follow-up period of 28 days. The synbiotic treatment contributes to higher biodiversity of the gut microbiota, increasing the community richness with respect to the group with the prebiotics alone and the placebo group. Its positive effect is also reflected in the variation of microbial community structure favoring the beneficial short-chain fatty acids bacterial producers. The amelioration of the health status of the subjects was also established by the reduction of common infectious disease symptom incidence, the stimulation of the gut immune system showing a noteworthy variation of fecal ß-defensin2 and calprotectin levels, and the modulation of the response of the respiratory tract's immune system by salivary IgA as well as total antioxidant capacity biomarkers.

In the present study, the effect of temperature shock (sudden and gradual) by increasing water temperature from 28 °C to 40 °C on survival, behavioral responses and immunological changes in Litopenaeus vannamei (L. vannamei) was studied. In sudden temperature shock, experimental groups were maintained at different temperature ranges such as 28 °C- 31 °C; 28 °C-34 °C; 28 °C-37 °C and 28 °C-40 °C along with 28 °C as control. For gradual temperature shock experiments, the initial water temperature was maintained at 28 °C for 24 h in control and then increased to 1 °C for every 24 h until reaching 40 °C. On reaching the final temperature of 40 °C, it was kept stable for 120 h. Results indicated that the increasing water temperature (sudden shock) affected survival, behavioral responses and immunological parameter. No shrimp survived at 40 °C treatment (sudden), whereas in the gradual temperature shock experiment 20% of animals survived at 40 °C. The increasing water temperature had no effects on behavioral responses up to 37 °C (gradual), but at 40 °C the observation of muscle cramps, low swimming rate, no feeding, muscle and hepatopancreas color turned whitish. Overall, the results suggest that L. vannamei can tolerate water temperature up to 34 °C under sudden shock and 37 °C under gradual shock conditions. This study reveals that shrimp L. vannamei can self-regulate to a certain extent of temperature variation in the environment.

Background and Aim: Gold nanorods (AuNRs) have gained much attention recent years due to their promising optical and chemical properties and are hence used in applied research and industrial nanotechnology. This study was designed to investigate the effect of gold nanoparticle shape (Gold nanorods vs. gold nanosphere) on immune response in rabbit. Materials and Methods: Thirty New Zealand white rabbits were divided into six groups (n=5 rabbits). The first group is the control negative received an intravenous (IV) injection of normal saline 0.9%; the second group (vaccinated) is the control positive, and the other four groups were vaccinated and received a single-dose or repeated five consecutive IV doses of 300 mg/kg body weight 50 nm AuNRs or 50 nm gold nanosphere (50 nm AuNSs) dissolved in ultrapure water. Blood and serum were collected for the hematological and biochemical analysis. Results: White blood cells (WBCs) count, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils showed significantly (p<0.05) higher values with the repeated-dose AuNRs. g-globulin levels showed a significant difference after 15 days in the single-dose AuNSs. Single-dose AuNSs significantly (p<0.05) increased the immunoglobulin G (IgG) and significantly (p<0.05) decreased the tumor necrosis factor-alpha. In addition, it elicited a significant (p<0.05) decrease in the malondialdehyde levels and a significant (p<0.05) increase of the superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and catalase levels. Moreover, evoked red blood cells count, mean corpuscular volume, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin were significantly (p<0.05) lower than the control group. The platelet count, lysozymes, and nitric oxide were significantly (p<0.05) higher in repeated-dose AuNRs. Conclusion: The effect of AuNPs is shape and dose-dependent. The repeated 5 days IV 50 nm AuNRs doses over 15 days showed a significant antioxidant effect, with no considerable toxicity or vascular reactions.

In aquatic animals, dietary protein plays a crucial role in their growth and immunity. A feeding trial was conducted on soft-shelled turtles (Pelodiscus sinensis) to assess the effects of various levels of protein on the specific growth rate (SGR), ambient water quality (total ammonia nitrogen (TAN), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP)), hematological parameters (respiratory burst (RB), red blood cell count (RBC), albumin content (Alb), hemoglobin level (Hb) and osmolality), plasma immunoglobulin M (IgM) levels and lysozyme activity. Soft-shelled turtles weighing about 4.02 g were fed fish meal-based diets with 14.38%, 20.41%, 26.19%, 32.23%, 37.63% and 45.23% protein for 8 weeks. SGR, RBC, Hb, Alb, RB, IgM and lysozyme activity were enhanced as the dietary protein was increased from 14.38% to 26.19%, then reached a plateau. For identical feeding times, TAN and TN were increased with elevating dietary protein levels. While, no statistically significant differences were observed among the 26.19%, 32.23% and 37.63% groups. When the turtles were cultivated for 56 days and fed with 45.23% protein, the TP in the culturing water was higher than that in the other groups. An increase in dietary protein level up to 26.19% increased the RNA/DNA ratio, which subsequently plateaued at a steady level. The levels of dietary protein had no impact on osmolality or alkaline phosphatase (AKP) activity. On the basis of broken-line analyses derived from SGR, the optimum dietary protein level for soft-shelled turtles was found to be 27.11% protein.

Nanoparticles (NPs), especially silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs), are widely used in various industrial applications and are released into the surrounding environment through industrial and household wastewater. They have enormous toxic effects on aquatic animals and amphibians. In the current study, a multi-biomarker approach was used to assess toxicity on Polypedates maculatus (P. maculatus) tadpoles collected from a freshwater pond and exposed to sub-lethal concentrations of Ag-NPs (1, 5 and 10 mg L-1) and ZnO-NPs (1, 10 and 50 mg L-1). A significant bioaccumulation of silver (Ag) and Zinc (Zn) was observed in the blood, liver, kidney and bones in comparison to control tadpoles. Blood parameters (Red blood cells (RBC), Hematocrit (Htc), White blood cells (WBC), monocytes, lymphocytes and neutrophils), immunological markers (ACH50, lysozyme, total Ig, total protein, albumin, and globulin), biochemical markers (glucose, cortisol, cholesterol, triglycerides, alanine transaminase (ALT), asparatate transaminase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), urea and creatinine) and the oxidative stress marker (LPO) of serum were increased significantly (p < 0.05) in Ag/ZnO-NPs exposed groups when compared to the control groups. The levels of mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC), mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and haemoglobin (Hb) in the ZnO NP-exposed groups were significantly different from those in the control group. Antioxidant (SOD and CAT) levels were significantly declined in the treatment groups. Based on the results, Ag/ZnO-NPs are toxic to aquatic organisms and amphibians at sub-lethal concentrations. The species P. maculatus can be used as a bioindicator for the nanomaterial (NM) contamination of freshwater systems.

In the present study, we evaluated the effects of administering Enterococcus faecium in food and/or water on the hematological and immunological parameters, intestinal microbiota, resistance to bacterial diseases (streptococcosis and francisellosis) and growth of Nile tilapia. Before the in vivo experiment, probiotic bacteria isolated from Nile tilapia were selected via inhibition tests. Sequencing, annotation, and assembly of the complete genome of the selected bacteria as well as other tests were performed using bioinformatics tools. Three treatments were implemented: G1 (probiotic feeding), G2 (probiotic in water), and G3 (probiotic in food and water); and a negative control (NC) was also employed. Treatment lasted 38 days, and each group consisted of fish and two repetitions. The fish were divided and infected with Streptococcus agalactiae S13 (serotype Ib) and Francisella orientalis. The G1 group had a higher average final weight gain than the G2, G3, and NC groups. Further, a significant increase in the number of thrombocytes was observed in the groups administered probiotics in the diet (G1 and G3). A statistical difference was observed in the mortality of fish infected with S. agalactiae in the NC compared to the treated groups. Cetobacterium was the 43 most abundant genus in the intestinal microbiota of all groups, including the NC group. E. faecium increased the immunity of fish administered the treatment and decreased the mortality caused by S. agalactiae. As an autochtone probiotic, E. faecium does not interfere with the local ecosystem and thus has a great probiotic potential for Nile tilapia in Brazil.

The polysaccharide-fucoidan plays a fundamental role in shrimp aquaculture by being used as a natural immunostimulant and dietary supplementation. In this study, Cystoseira trinodis fucoidan (FCT) was extracted, its structure was determined using FT-IR analysis, and its effect of fucoidan on growth performance and WSSV resistance in Litopenaeus vannamei was evaluated. Four experimental diets, including the control (without FCT), 0.1, 0.2, and 0.4% FCT, were formulated and fed to shrimps for 60 days. Next, they were exposed to WSSV, and their mortality rate was noted daily up to 20 days. The results of the growth experiment demonstrated a significant increase in the final weight, WG, and SGR, and a lower FCR in treatments than in control. During the challenge trial, 100% mortality was recorded in control within ten days. However, FCT-treated shrimps indicated a mortality increase from 43.33 to 75.00% during 20 days of infection. The immunological and biochemical parameters and the expression of immune-related genes in individuals fed the FCT-incorporated diet considerably (p < 0.01) improved over control before the challenge (0 days) and after the challenge on days 5, 10, 15, and 20. It was concluded that L. vannamei fed on diets supplemented with all concentrations of FCT (especially 0.4%) had improved the growth, immunological and biochemical parameters, and the expression of immune-related genes, as well as enhancing the resistance against WSSV.

<b>Background and Objective:</b> COVID-19 is a fast-spreading worldwide pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2. The World Health Organization recommended wearing face masks. Masks have become an urgent necessity throughout the pandemic, the study's goal was to track the impact of wearing masks on immunological responses. <b>Materials and Methods:</b> This study was conducted on 40 healthy people who were working in health care at Nineveh Governorate Hospitals from September-December, 2020. They wore face masks at work for more than 8 months for an average of 6 hrs a day. The control sample included 40 healthy individuals, who wore masks for very short periods. All samples underwent immunological and physiological tests to research the effects of wearing masks for extended periods within these parameters. <b>Results:</b> The results showed a significant decrease in total White Blood Count and the absolute number of neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes and phagocytic activity. However, there was a significant increase in the absolute number of eosinophils in participants compared with the control. The results also suggested there were no significant differences in IgE, haemoglobin concentration and blood O<sub>2 </sub>saturation in participants who wore masks for more than 6 hrs compared to the control group. The results showed a significant increase in pulse rate in participants who wore masks for more than 6 hrs compared to the control group. The results also showed a strong correlation coefficient between the time of wearing masks and some immunological, haematological parameters. <b>Conclusion:</b> Wearing masks for long periods alters immunological parameters that initiate the immune response, making the body weaker in its resistance to infectious agents.

Vaccination against porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is commonly performed in piglets worldwide, and increasingly also in sows. We conducted a literature search and review to assess the potential interference of maternally derived antibodies (MDA) in piglets with vaccination against PCV2. The effectiveness of vaccination was compared to no vaccination in the presence of high levels of MDA (≥8 log2 IPMA titer), as reported in field studies. In total, 13 papers fulfilled the predefined inclusion criteria, allowing up to 24 comparisons per parameter. In the presence of high levels of MDA, vaccinated pigs had, on average, a 20 g/d higher mean daily weight gain and a 34% lower mortality compared to non-vaccinates. The maximum percentage of viremic pigs was reduced by 63% and the maximum viral load in serum was 0.72 log10 PCV2 DNA copies lower. Vaccination at 3 weeks of age was associated with the highest improvements in production parameters and reductions in viremia. Our findings suggest that the vaccination of piglets is effective with respect to production parameters and viremia even in the presence of high MDA, with an age of 3 weeks at vaccination being most beneficial.

According to an analysis of published data, only 20% of patients with the new coronavirus infection develop severe life-threatening complications. Currently, there are no known biomarkers, the determination of which before the onset of the disease would allow assessing the likelihood of its severe course. The purpose of this literature review was to analyze possible genetic factors characterizing the immune response to the new coronavirus infection that could be associated with the expression of angiotension-converting enzyme 2 (ACE-2) and related proteins as predictors of severe Corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We analyzed original articles published in Medline, PubMed and Scopus databases from December 2019 to November 2020. For searching articles, we used the following keywords: New coronavirus infection, Severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), COVID-19, severe course, complications, thrombosis, cytokine storm, ACE-2, biomarkers. In total, 3714 publications were selected using the keywords, of which 8 were in congruence with all the criteria. The literature analysis of the association of immunogenic characteristics and the expression of ACE-2 and related proteins with the development of severe COVID-19 revealed following genetic factors: HLA-B*46:01 genotype, CXCR6 gene hypoexpression, CCR9 gene expression, TLR7, rs150892504 mutations in the ERAP2 gene, overexpression of wild-type ACE-2, TMPRSS2 and its different polymorphisms. Genes, associated with the severe course, are more common among men. According to the analysis data, it can be assumed that there are population differences. However, the diagnostic significance of the markers described must be confirmed with additional clinical studies.
